Bottled in small batches from casks deemed too good to be added to the vat for the standard 18yo, these Gran Reservas are now very hard to come by. The Macallan Gran Reserva 1980 is a truly fabulous Macallan spirit and with its voluminous, strongly sherry-toned style, there is no more recognized malt than The Macallan. Matured in exquisite sherry casks, the Macallan Gran Reserva is one of the best whiskies in its class today and provides a perfect combination of sherry, malt, light smoky tones with its very own dryness, roundness and depth. A outstandig Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with lush, powerful, clear tones from aroma to finish. At that time Macallan still used the rare Ministrel barley variety Golden Promise, which was abandoned by other distilleries because it was considered too difficult and too expensive to grow, but its rich natural oil allowed the whiskey to mature for a particularly long time. The Macallan, on the other hand, is convinced that it is exactly the right one for the rich and sensual character of a The Macallan whisky. The water, an important raw material for the whisky production, comes from the own source of the country estate and is fresh, natural and without own taste. The oily consistency allows a long storage in oak casks. The Macallan Gran Reserva 1980 has appeared like the Gran Reserva 1979 (3000 bottles) in a very small edition of only 1100 bottles and therefore offers a lot of potential for connoisseurs, collectors and gourmets of first-class old style Scotch whiskies.…

Tasting Notes

Nose

Starts on heady notes of mulled wine, cloves, big juniper berries, spearmint and coffee toffee and gets then more classically sherried, with the dark chocolate upfront and then notes of soy sauce, balsamico and barbecued beef.

Taste

Thick, oily, rich, not weak at all despite the 40%, and more of a classic now. Heavy notes of rum-soaked raisins, figs, old rancio (huge!) and orange and herbs liqueur (like that famous Dantziger Goldwasser). Gets then spicier, mainly on cloves and pepper, with very funny hints of mescal as well. Excellent, really.

Finish

Long, coating, rich but clean and pure, with a faint saltiness as the signature and an aftertaste on blackberry jelly.
